children's ministry... along with classroom management tips

I went to Mr. C.D. Le's lecture concerning classroom management.
I learned many helpful techniques for running any class or children's bible study.

  1. Post 1-6 rules and expectations
    1. on a poster, write 1-6 rules what you expect from your students. e.g. be respectful to teacher, raise hand before ask questions, and most importantly have fun!
    2. also, this is very important; tell your students about consequences of not following up those rules. e.g. give them warning; first name called, verbal warning, second, name goes on the board, third, there will be a check mark next to his or her name
      1. once students get a double check mark, there will be no recess, no gym, no fun party, no field trip.
  2. YOU are the Boss
    1. don't be a friend to them until Christmas
  3. Be consistent
    1. "do what you say"
  4. Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Rewards- "do both!"
    1. intrinsic- say "I love you" "I love your shoes"
    2. extrinsic- give them stickers, throw a pizza party
  5. Modify your management plan but don't change
    1. "stick to your gut!" although your students will push your buttons
  6. Never "kick" your students out of the classroom
    1. you must fix the kid. They need you!
  7. Provide an active curriculum (e.g. do hands-on projects after each unit taught, provide art and music activities, group games, spelling basketball, mum-ball, math around the world, field trips, teach science)
    1. for field trips, you can teach them how to behave respectfully in public place
  8. Get to know your student's world (shows they watch, music and movies, their language and culture)
    1. this builds trusts
  9. Be active during recess duty, eat lunch with your students
    1. invest your time during recess walking around your students
    2. you can hear a different things from your students
  10. Glasser, Assertive Discipline, Love and Logic Philosophy
  11. Tell your students that you love them at the moment when you least want to say it
    1. say "you screw up but I love you," and then, say "how can I help you out"
    2. love them truly
  12. Teach values
    1. help them speak"please," "thank you"
  13. Interview your students
    1. utilize your recess time
    2. ask"What can I do to be a better teacher for you?
    3. ask "who do you live with?"
    4. suggested topics e.g. family life, TV shows
  14. Recommended book First Day of School, by Harry Wong
