"사람들은 집중해야 할 것에 '예스'라고 말하는 것이 집중이라고생각한다. 그러나 사실은 정반대다. 집중이란 다른 수많은 훌륭한 아이디어에 '노'라고 말하는 것이다." 평범한 사람들은 이렇게까지 독하게 "노"라고 말하지 못한다. 그러나 잡스는 무엇에 "예스"라고 말할지 결정하기 전에 "노"라고 말해야 할 것을 차례차례 정한다. 그런 후 더 이상은 "노"라고 말할 것이 남아 있지 않을 만큼 황량해진 장소에 남은 광맥만을 판다. 추리고 또 추린 끝에 남은 극소수에 집중하며, 하지 않은 것을 절대 후회하지 않는다.
'우선순위를 정하고 위에서부터 순서대로 실행해 나간다'라는 것은 상식이며 올바른 방법이다. 하지만 상식 밖의 성과를 올리려면, 끊임없이 "노"라고 말한 끝에 남은 한두 개만을 한다가 되어야 한다. 후자는 종종 결렬이나 증오를 부른다. 그렇지만 후자야말로 잡스가 선택한 길이다.

Lessons from a bus terminal and a cello recital
A thought came up when i was waiting inside of a bus at an express bus terminal.
1. Lesson
(1) No matter how well a system (e.g. an website) is built, if people run the system poorly, there's no use for it.
A. Reason: Bus terminal system is well built (e.g. efficient ticketing system, well-arranged parking lines and space, etc), except drivers and guiding people who try to get their vehicles out of the terminal earlier than any other buses. My bus was finally out after 30 min. of waiting.
B. Solution: What if there was a neutral person or group of people who manage and guide each bus to get out in order and each bus driver must comply by them?
Some thoughts after attending a cello recital
1. Lesson
(1) Attitude matters: Though you might be working as a newly haired employee, your attitude should show whether you are set for greatness or not.
(2) Teamwork: Through engagement in team setting, humans need to be equipped with how to operate in teams like orchestra, ensemble, duet, etc

나는 외모에 컴플렉스가 있다. 아시겠지만, 대학교 때 고시 3개를 합격했다. 사법고시 합격, 외부고시 2등, 행정 고시 1등. 그리고 서울대 법대를 수석 졸업했다.
학교 졸업 후 부모님께 큰 절을 했었다. 똑똑한 머리를 물려줘서가 아니라, 사실은 변변찮은 외모덕에 그저 고시에만 전념할 수 있게 해줬기 때문에 감사하다는 의미로.
내 직업은 1. 변호사이면서2. 방송도 하고3. 책을 쓰고 있다. 평생 소원이 1년에 1권씩 평생 책을 내는 것이다.4. 글도 쓴다. 모 신문사에 경제기사를 1주일에 2개정도 쓴다.5. 또 오늘과 같은 특강도 한다. 평균 1주일에 2회 정도6. 증권분야에서도 활동하고 있다. 운영하고 있는 사이트가 있는데 회원수만도 3만5천명 정도 된다. 나름대로 홈페이지 관련 사업을 하나 구상 중인 것도 있다.7. 마지막으로 대학에서 겸임교수로 활동하고 있다.
이처럼 내가 하고 있는 일이 무척 많은 것 같고, 어떻게 이걸 다 할까 생각이 들겠지만 다 가능하다.
이 중에서 한가지만 하더라도 힘들다고 하는 사람이 많다. 그러나 가능하다고 생각하면 다 가능하다.
무엇이든지 목표가 중요하며, 그 목표 달성을 위해 가장 중요한 것은 확신이다. 사람들은 어려운 일일수록 확신을 갖지 못한다.
인생에 있어 2가지 자세가 있다. 보통 사람들은 남보다 적게 노력하고 결과는 남들과 같은 똑같이 나오게 하려고 한다. 사실은 이것이 경제학 법칙에 맞는 것이다. 투입을 적게하고 효과를 많이 내는 것.
반대로, 다른 사람들 만큼의 결과를 얻기 위해서는 더 많은 노력을 해야 한다고 생각할 수 도 있다. 나의 경험상으로 보면 후자가 훨씬 좋은 결과를 낳는다.
남보다 노력을 더 많이 해서 비슷한 결과를 가져 오는 것이 비효율적인 것 같지만, 실제로 이것은 어느 시점이 지나면 훨씬 더 좋은 결과를 가져온다.이것이 내가 인생르 살면서 내 스스로 내린 결론이다.
그럼 노력이란 무엇이냐? 나는 "노력이란 성공의 확률을 높이는 것이다."라고 정의 내린다. 하지만 물론 결과를 반드시 보장하지는 않는다.
노력에도 함수 관계가 성립한다.* 노력 = f(시간 X 집중)
내가 실제 노력을 했는가 안했는가를 판단하려면 시간을 많이 투입했거나 집중을 잘했거나 살펴보면 된다.
똑같은 일을 하더라도 3시간만에 끝내는 사람이 있는가 하면 5시간만에 끝내는 사람도 있다. 그러나 3시간만에 끝내는 사람이 실제 일을 더 잘하는 것 같지만 나머지 2시간을 어떻게 보내느냐가 중요하다. 더 많이 알기 위해 그 2시간을 투자하지 않았다면 노력하지 않은 것이다.
짧은 시간을 비교해 보면 노력을 적게하고, 많이 하는 것이 결과만 보면 거의 미미하다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 그 순간을 이겨내면 주식처럼, 가속도가 붙기 시작하면서 그 차이는 엄청나다.
집중에 대해서 얘기해 보면, 고시 공부할 때 예를 들어 보겠다. 나는 고시 공부를 1년간 해서 합격했다. 어떻게 가능 했느냐?첫째는 된다고 생각하는 확신이 있었기 때문이고, 둘째는 남보다 더 많은 노력을 했기 때문이다.
보통 고시에 합격하려면, 봐야 할 책이 50권, 권당 페이지는 500p. 그 책을 5번을 봐야 합격한다는 얘기가 있다. 그러나 나는 7번을 봤다. 이를 계산해보면,50 X 500 X 7 = 175,000 페이지를 읽어야 한다는 얘기다. 이것을 1년을 360일로 계산해보면 1일 목표량이 나온다. 즉, 1일 500페이지 정도의 분량을 봐야 한다는 것이다.
이처럼, 목표를 세울때는 구체적으로 세워야 한다. 막연한 목표는 달성하기 힘들다.
이 결론을 보면 "인간이 할 짓이 아니다"라고 생각할 것이다. 누구나 그렇게 생각한다. 그렇게 생각하면 사람들은 포기하게 된다. 설사 하게 되더라도 하다가 흐지부지 된다.
이렇게 목표에 대해 확신이 없고, 목표를 의심하는 사람은 집중을 할 수 없다. 무엇보다도 자신의 목표에 확신을 가져라.
된다는 사람만 되고 안된다고 생각하는 사람은 안된다. 일단 안 된다고 생각하는 대부분의 85%의 사람들은 이미 나의 경쟁상대가 아닌 것이다. 된다고 생각하는 일부만 나의 경쟁이 된다. 그럼 경쟁대상이 줄어드니 훨씬 마음도 한결 가벼워진다.
세상도 절대적으로 잘하는 사람은 원하지도 않고 필요하지도 않다. 남 보다만 잘하면 된다. 그럼, 다른 사람보다 잘하고 있는지를 어덯게 판단하느냐? 그것은 나 자신을 판단 기준으로 삼으면 된다.
인간은 거의 비슷하다. 내가 하고 싶은 선에서 멈추면 남들도 그 선에서 멈춘다. 남들보다 약간의 괴로움이 추가되었을 때라야 비로소 노력이란 것을 했다고 할 수 있다.
고시 공부할 때 7시간 잤다. 장기간 공부를 해야할 경우라면 일단 잠은 충분히 자야한다. 하루 24시간 중 나머지 17시간이 중요하다. 고시생의 평균 1일 공부시간은 10시간 정도다.
그러나 정말 열심히하는 사람은 잠자는 시간빼고 17시간을 하는 사람이 있을 것이다라는 생각을 했다.
그러면 정말, 밥먹는 시간도 아까웠다. 남들과 똑같이 먹어서는 안된다고 생각한 것이다. 반찬 떠 먹는 시간도 아까웠다.씹는 시간도 아까웠다. 그래서 모든 반찬을 밥알 크기로 으깨어 밥과 비벼 최대한의 씹는 시간도 아꼈다. 숟가락을 놓는 그 순간부터 공부는 항상 계속 되어야했다. 나의 경쟁자가 설마 이렇게까지 하겠냐하고 생각들면 노력했다고 할 수 있는 것이다.
미국에서 생활할 때 보면 소위 미국의 전문가라고 하는 사람들은 간단한 샌드위치로 끼니를 때운다. 점심시간 1시간 다 쓰고, 이래저래 20~30분 또 그냥 보내는 우리나라 사람들은 그들에 비하면 일 하는게 아니다.
집중을 잘 하는 것은 벼락치기 하는 것이다. 벼락치기 할 때가 더 기억에 오래 남는다고 한다. 우등생은 평소에 벼락치기 하는 마음으로 공부를 한다.
이렇게 할 수 있는 이유는 목표가 분명하기 때문이다. 막연한 목표를 가지면 이렇게 긴장이 안되지만 분명하면 항상 긴장되고 집중을 잘 할 수 있다.
방송하면서 인생이 많이 바뀌었다. 처음 주변 사람들은 말렸지만 결과적으로 보면 좋은 결과를 가져왔다.
나는 세상을 살면서 이런 생각을 해본다. 사람은 해야 할 일과 하지 말아야 할 일이 있다. 사람이 해야할 일이란 남에게 해을 끼치는 일이 아니면 해도 되는 일이다 라고 생각한다. 그렇게 생각하면 세상에 해야 할 일이 참 많다.
인생에서 내가 할 수 있는 일들을 쌓아 가면 된다. 하다가 안되면 포기하더라도 아예 안하는 것보다는 낫다. 아예 하지 않으면 할 수 있는 일은 아무 것도 없다.
나의 징크스는 시험에 합격하려면 10번을 봐야 하는 것이다 .그래야 합격의 확신을 갖는다. 3~4번만 보면 불안하다. 그래서 그냥 뭐든지 기본적으로 10번을 본다. 몇 번 3~4번 책을 보고 시험을 본 적 있다. 역시 떨어졌다.

직장에서 윗사람이 일을 시킬 때 남보다 더 많은 일을 시키고, 나한테만 어려운 일을 시키더라도 신나는 표정을 지어보자. 대부분의 사람, 아니 나의 경쟁자는 이럴 때 얼굴을 찌푸릴 것이다. 그러나 내가 이기려면 그들 보다는 다른 모습이어야 한다.
힘들더라도 괴로움을 추가해 보자.
남들에 비해 노력한 만큼의 결과가 나오지 않더라도 노력을 계속해야 한다. 3배의 노력만 한다면 4번째부터는 분명 가속도가 붙어 급속도로 차이가 날 것이다.
마지막으로 대인관계에 대해 강조하고 싶다. 세상을 살다보면 대인관계를 유지하는 것도 노력이다. 성공을 위해서는 나 혼자의 노력 외에 대인관계가 차지하는 비중이 높은 경우가 있다. 어떤 상대를 만나든 최소 5분은 상대방을 위해 생각하는 시간으로 할애해 보자.
남과 똑같이 해서는 절대 노력했다고 할 수 없다.

마지막으로 대인관계에 대해 강조하고 싶다. 세상을 살다보면 대인관계를 유지하는 것도 노력이다. 성공을 위해서는 나 혼자의 노력 외에 대인관계가 차지하는 비중이 높은 경우가 있다. 어떤 상대를 만나든 최소 5분은 상대방을 위해 생각하는 시간으로 할애해 보자.
남과 똑같이 해서는 절대 노력했다고 할 수 없다.

[면접] 1분 자기소개 할 때는 아래와 같이... <출처: 미여지>
많은 학생들이 “도대체 면접을 잘 보려면 어떻게 해야 하나요?”라는 질문을 하곤 합니다.
그럴 때 마다 저는 이렇게 말합니다. “생각해보세요.” 라고… 그러면 뚱한 표정을 짓습니다. 왜 답을 가르쳐 주지 않느냐 라는 식으로… 저는 분명히 답을 말했는데도 말이죠.
면접은 정의를 내리는 것입니다. 즉 interview =definition 입니다. 그리고 이 definition의 바탕은 바로 여러분의 경험(Experience)과 생각(thinking or opinion)입니다.
무슨 말인지 잘 모르겠다고요? 자 우선 아래의 것을 먼저 생각해봅시다
여러분은 현재 대학생(혹은 대졸)입니다. 채용에 대하여 깊이 있게 고민해보시기 바랍니다. 여러분에게 기대하는 것은 단순하게 회계정보를 입력하고, 생산물품을 생산하고, 물품을 관리하고 하는 업무. 즉, 시키는 대로만 하는 운영자(Operator)가 아닙니다. 그러한 직무는 여러분보다 낮은 학력의 소지자를 주로 채용하고 있으며 업무가 단순하고 특히 반복적이며 매뉴얼에 의거하여 운영되는 특징이 있습니다. 그런 이유로 인하여 대졸 채용예정자에 비하여 샐러리가 20~30% 낮습니다. 즉 대졸채용은 운영을 하는 운영자를 채용하는 것이 아니기에 보다 높은 연봉을 제공하게 되는 것입니다. 비유를 해 본다면 여러분은 향후 길을 닦아서 아스팔트를 까는 사람들이 아니라 어느 방향으로 길을 가야 한다라는 것을 해야 하는 사람이라는 것입니다. 그리고 그 길의 방향을 잘못 정하면 그 기업은 자칫 망할 수도 있다는 것을 의미하기도 합니다. 제가 말하고 싶은 것은 운영업무가 중요하지 않다거나 좋지 않은 업무라는 것이 아닙니다. 기업은 결국 이윤을 추구하는 조직체입니다. 그러므로 가치를 창출해주는 업무에 보다 높은 임금을 주는 것입니다. 그렇기에 대졸에게 요구하는 것은 바로 스스로 어떤 문제에 대하여 생각할 수 있느냐 하는 것 즉 Thinking을 할 줄 아느냐 하는 것입니다. 저는 오히려 여러분에게 이렇게 말하고 싶습니다. 여러분은 과연 운영하는 사람들에 비하여 스스로 생각하는 능력을 길렀습니까? 만약 그런 능력이 없다면 제 아무리 스펙을 올려도 면접에서 좋은 점수를 받기란 어렵습니다.

그럼 면접관으로서의 제 평가가 궁금하신가요? 네, 바로 완전 미흡입니다. 그런데 정말 놀라운 것은 이러한 식의 자기소개가 거의 대부분의 지원자가 하고 있는 자기소개 형식이라는 것입니다. 오히려 일부의 지원자는 아 저렇게 하면 되겠구나 하고 배울지도 모를 정도로 잘 정돈되어 있다고 느낄 것입니다. 여러분이 이러한 자기소개방법을 어디서 모범답안이라고 배웠는지도 모르겠습니다. 안타까울 뿐입니다.
위의 자기소개는 Definition이 잘못된 자기소개의 전형입니다. 아침 8시부터 저녁 6~7시까지 면접을 진행하게 되면 거의 80%의 지원자가 이러한 식의 자기소개를 합니다. 때문에 3~4개조만 진행이 되어도 면접관은 지루함을 느끼기 시작하고 소위 말하는 cut을 하게 됩니다.

B: 안녕하십니까? 지원자 남지현입니다. 네 면접관님 제 얼굴을 한번 봐주시겠습니까? 보시다시피 저는 얼굴이 남자로서도 참 험악한 편입니다. 소위 조폭이라고 합니다. 하지만 저는 학교 다닐 때 소위 말하는 삥을 뜯어 본적도 뜯겨 본적도 없습니다. (면접관들이 웃었음. 면접 중에 이러한 자연스러운 웃음을 주게 될 경우 좋은 점수는 따 놓은 당상).
다시 한번 소개 드립니다. 얼굴로서 모든 것을 볼 수 없다라는 것을 자명한 사실을 믿습니다. 비록 얼굴은 험악하지만 그 누구보다 믿음직스러운 사람이라는 말을 듣는 저를 소개하고 싶습니다. 감사합니다.

Read this Blog: Starting a Career in User Experience Design

About once a week, I get an email from someone who is interested in becoming a user experience professional. They ask me a series of questions about how one would do this. The questions and areas of focus for these emails vary dramatically, depending on the interests of the individual asking. I thought it would be a good idea to write a post on some of the more common information about how to begin a career in user experience and how to become a user experience professional.
I have found three core areas of advice that I tend to dispense when it comes to someone who is starting out and wanting to know more about user experience. These three areas contain a lot of information. I could write a book on each one, but for the sake of brevity, I am going to keep my advice here limited to the high-level concepts. I am also going to limit this advice to being more web-centric rather than trying to cover all of the platforms and perspectives that user experience covers.
This advice likely applies to fields outside of the user experience realm. It is also applicable for those wanting to go into a specialized area of user experience.
Education
The number one success factor for user experience professionals is education. It is critical to understand the realm of user experience and all that it covers before deciding on what areas to specialize in, be it information architecture, usability engineering, interaction design, visual design, content strategy & copywriting, web analysis, user research, online marketing, or web strategy.
This education could be formal, through programs offered at universities for specific fields. For example, university programs for Information Architecture or Usability.
If a formal education is not for you there are more informal options to look at. Consider self-guided education, such as the WaSP InterAct Curriculum. Consider simply reading highly recommended UX books. In addition to reading on your own you can also join user experience book clubs that have regular meetings all around the world.
Another option is to find someone willing to mentor you. There are several programs for those looking for a mentor, as well as those looking to be a mentor. For example, the IAI Mentor Program and the IxDA Mentorship Program.
Experience
Coupled with education is experience. A formal degree in information science won’t get you too far in the professional field if you haven’t had first hand experience doing the work outside of college. This often means getting a entry-level job to get some projects under your belt. The first step in getting a job is creating a highly-polished resume.
Now, there are a billion resources out there for how to craft a resume, so I don’t plan rehashing that here, but I am going to tell you some tips that could help you actually land a UX job. Your resume is a elevator pitch, avoid going into detail where not needed. Focus on the things that are important to that specific job your are applying for. Create a special resume that highlights the necessary points needed for each job your are applying for. Have it reviewed, edited, and polished by your friends. You can’t afford to have spelling or typographical errors in your resume.
Going hand-in-hand with the resume is a portfolio. This is something I feel a lot of user experience professionals miss, especially those who do not specialize in visual design. Yes, even if you are just producing wireframes or XHTML/CSS all day, it is crucial to have a portfolio of your work. Employers want to see your work, your code, and designs.
If you don’t have any work to put into a portfolio outside class projects, there are ways to get work to show. One way would be to do some freelance work for friends and companies you have established relationships with. Remember, this is about you building your portfolio, it may be worth it to take a project or two for free to do so, ideally for a non-profit organization. If you have a full time job doing something unrelated to UX perhaps moonlighting as a freelancer from home is another thing to consider. If you can’t get a project, try creating some scenarios that would allow you to show your skills. For example, what would you do if Apple asked you to redesign their website? What if Yahoo needed a new information architecture? In a worst case scenario, use your own portfolio as an example of your work. Any work is better than none.
Once you have a portfolio and highly-polished resume, the next step is to find a job. A good way to get your foot in the door, especially if you are still in school, is to do an internship at a company you one day hope to work for. This establishes a solid relationship, familiarity with your work and skill set, and most of all, trust. When that company decides it’s time to hire, you will be high up on their list.
Another aspect of finding a UX position has to do with figuring out what kind of job is right for you. For example, in a position within an agency, you work with multiple companies and projects lasting from one week to an entire year, depending on scope. In this case, someone is hiring you or your company for their expertise in user experience. The flip-side of this would be working within a business who needs a full in-house team. In this case, your projects will be internal to the company and may not be as variable as what you would encounter in an agency setting. You may be working on the same project for several years, or a group of projects for a year or two.
Exposure
Building on the education and experience is exposure. Exposure is very critical for differentiating yourself from others in the industry. It is also useful for differentiating what you do versus other roles that may appear as very similar at first glance. This differentiation is established by being a thought leader in your area of specialization, and by helping to define that area better.
The first aspect of being a thought leader is to start writing about your work, especially if it seems as if no one else is really doing what it is that you are doing within the user experience space. A blog is a good first step in to writing about your expertise. Even if you are just learning something for the first time doesn’t mean you should not write about your experiences on the subject. Writing for other user experience publications is also another good step. What you write doesn’t have to be a lengthy article either, it can be just collection of links or commentary on something someone else wrote. Posting useful information via Twitter is another great example of this. This will help establish your expertise and help others out as well. Your ultimate goal is to be the first person who comes to mind when someone is thinking about a specific subject.
In addition to writing, you can get great exposure by speaking at user experience events. Practice the craft of public speaking, it will become useful in your career as a user experience professional. To get noticed as recognized speaker, you must first have some presenting experience under your belt. A good way to do this is to ask to speak at various local user groups and meet-ups happening within your area. These events are often organized by those within the immediate community and it doesn’t take much more than an email to be considered. Professional conferences may require you to submit your presentation ideas or even a completed paper. The more academic the event, the more likely there will be a formal call for papers and a peer review process.
If you can’t seem to get a speaking gig, the next thing you can do to help increase your exposure within the professional space is to simply attend events. Start with local groups, go to any event you feel is related to what you are doing. Introduce yourself to anyone who seems interested, print and bring business cards even if they are just your name, email and Twitter ID. Be sure to get business cards from anyone you talk to. Engage in the discussions going on even if the event is just a social hour. Some of the best conversations I have had happened at social hours. Some of the greatest people I know I met at a local gathering.
Not up for going to a lot of local or national events? You can use Twitter to communicate with several other user experience professionals. Most of them are more than willing to help you out and answer any questions you may have about user experience. Likewise, when you tweet, keep it on topic and useful. Twitter is quickly becoming the most efficient means of communication among peers out there, you can use it to gain some level exposure, education, and more if done right. Remember these are other people you are talking to, be kind and courteous of their time and interest.
Like Twitter you can also get engaged with the community by simply reading industry blogs and following along in the comments and forums. Be sure you take the time to learn about the people involved with each blog or website before jumping into the middle of a ongoing conversation. Again, be respectful and courteous of everyone’s opinion and the time they are going to take reading your comments, etc.
Once you have established some connections with other professionals in your area, start emailing them and seeing if they would be up for you bouncing ideas off them. You would be surprised at how many colleagues will be interested in giving you critiques of your work, even if it’s just high level feedback. Some of these relationships may even build to the level of mentorship like I mentioned above. Be sure to give back as much as these colleagues are giving their time and energy to you. Go out of your way to help them when they ask. Help them find connections when you think you may know someone who can help them. Be a connector. They will give back ten fold.

My life at stake
Just random thoughts...
What do you think I should do Lord? Today I begin to wake up at 7am to get my body adjusted to my new job position.
I need to know what’s at stake and what’s most important to me at this moment. I need to wait for “my marshmallows” instead of touching them or eating them up right away.
Need to read books. Gotta finish books in my room.
Need to organize my documents and files. Massive amount of documents, newspapers, and papers in my room need to be trashed.
Need to plan ahead for my possible internship. Might get to work in Bundang and gotta look for a place to stay.
Need to study consulting. Gotta learn ways to master business basics: frameworks, strategies, etc.
Need to get ready to start dating. Gotta gather myself up for possible dates.

Black, the movie review
I just watched a movie called “Black.” I never wept so much till I watched this movie. I can name “Life is beautiful,” and some other movies but not like this movie I wept so much. Among the statements of the actors, I found many contexts quite similar to mine. I... Read More’m in the middle of my battle with finding a job in Seoul and so was the main character: She was fighting against darkness, ignorance, unworthiness, and failures. I’m going through a similar challenge: a series of rejections from companies that I’ve applied. Although the main character or teacher of her found one of core reasons for the failure, I didn’t think I haven’t found one yet. I just realized, however, while typing this appreciation paragraph, that the true essence of my failure was from my lack of courage to fight against darkness, insecurity, and rejections from people.
From now on, I will celebrate my failures whenever I get rejection in my application process. Thank God for allowing me to see this movie today on my way to Seoul. Otherwise I might have deleted the movie on my laptop. Help me to overcome this difficult job application process.

If you don't make a choice for yourself, someone else will.
I only have 3 hours: 1 hour for file management, 1 hour for planning for interview and test, and 1 hour to get ready for tomorrow.
Realized that I need to prepare myself for the future. If I applied to Korean companies while studying in the U.S., I probably have been better off for the things that I'm going through right now. However, I didn't prepare myself and I wasn't even earnestly attempted to see my future, I now am living in misery.
Preparing for an MBA degree is the same. I could have started GMAT preparation earlier than this year but I'm now stuck in job application and other things in life.
I need to get myself ready; see things coming at me in a moment; see the waves of tsunami before it reaches to shore and crush me.

A realization about life
When I was watching Doogie Howser, M.D. treating an emergency situation at ER, there was a lightening bolt kind of realization struck in my head. Emergency is not only just applied to medical specialists but also to other parts of life such as HCI (human computer interaction) or marketing sector. A lesson

For the job search, 1) redefine what I wish to accomplish in life 2) find my talentsIn mission statement, put down things that I would like to achieve within 5 years (organize my talents). Put down scalable goals.

Missionary Esther mentioned that 90% of American Christians are no different than non American Christians. I was shocked. Where are the areas that I do the same? Sex, etc?
Lord, forgive me for the things that I've done. Let me be like you.

Devotional: Pleasure seeker=poverty
1. "He who loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and oil will never be rich."
I realized that I have been heading toward a wrong direction in life. I have been seeking for earthly pleasure such as porn and game. God wants me to quit those two. He loves me and He wants me back.
2. Lord, please let me be "he who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor." Righteousness is the key in life. What should I do to become righteous? I pursue rightesouness and love! I pursue righteousness and love! I pursue righteousness and love!
3. "The slugggard's crafving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work. " I love work! I love work! I love work!
4. The proud and arrogant man=="Mocker" is his name; he behaves with overweening pride." I'm a humble man! No pride and arrogance will remain in my life.

A new finding
Isn't life supposed to be pursuing the goal instead of little things happening aside the way?
I went to San Diego Zoo yesterday and Ben and I took SkyFari, an air gondola tour. At first, I was afraid of little rattling sounds and physical shaking because I was focusing on what was happening around me instead of enjoying the goal that I had, which is to overview of the zoo. The funny phenomenon was that the more I focus on the rattling nature of gondola, the more I get afraid of the tour although the experience was supposed to be fun and rewarding. After all, I changed my focus to the zoo and started browsing over the zoo. From that moment to the end of the tour, I was able to reach a moment of solace and comfort even though I was high in the air.
The lesson is that I need to set up goal in my life. And that process starts today the January 1st.

- I haven't controlled my passion or temper for years. I have noticed that I am lack of this virtue. I need to develop this skill.

- I got only 5 more days to finish my tour. I need to copy all the pictures from my crew members. Get addresses from them to send gifts. I need to talk to USPS to find out sizes and prices of shipping. Also, I need to buy some gifts for my host family. Of course, I got massive amount of books to finish. I only finished a couple. I need more books to read.
Let me be wise Lord to live today.
==Yesterday, I learned that I need to control my tongue just as todays message. I tried to implement on that lesson at work. I tried not to spit back on the person who gave me a "hard time." I tried to get cheerful look, too. Lord, give me wisdom in keeping up with this skill.

CEO들이야말로 공부하는 직장인-샐러던트라고 할 수 있다. 샐러던트는 샐러리맨(Salaryman)과 스튜던트(Student)의 합성어로 직장에 몸담고 있으면서 새로운 분야를 공부하거나 자신이 종사하고 있는 분야에 대한 전문성을 더욱 높이기 위해 지속적으로 공부하는 사람을 가리킨다. 취미 생활 내지는 여가 활동으로 CEO들이 선호하는 것은 독서(81%), 골프(75%), TV 시청(47%), 영화 관람(43%), 공연 관람(35%), 여행(32%) 등이었다(복수응답). 이들 활동은 각각 응답 CEO의 약 3분의 1 이상이 평소 꾸준히 하고 있다고 답했다. 나머지는 등산(29%), 음악 감상(26%), 수면(23%), 수영(11%), 쇼핑(8%), 바둑겴掠?5%), 걷기(4%) 순으로 꼽혔다. 독서는 나이가 많을수록 뚜렷하게 많이 하는 것으로 나타났다(40대 이하 70%, 50대 81%, 60대 이상 88%). 건강 관리를 위해 꾸준히 하고 있는 활동으로는 각각 과반수가 골프(68%)와 걷기(57%)를 꼽았다(복수응답). 헬스(40%)와 등산(28%)도 건강 관리를 위한 활동으로 CEO들이 비교적 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 나머지 활동은 조깅(11%), 수영(9%), 마라톤(4%), 맨손체조(3%), 스포츠 댄스-국궁(각각 1%) 순으로 지적됐다. 그 부족한 시간을 이들은 어디에 활용할까? 우리는 패널들에게 평소 가정생활에서 꾸준히 하는 활동이 무엇인지 물었다(복수응답). 패널의 절반 이상이 꾸준히 하는 활동은 이런 것들이다. 배우자와의 대화(93%), 배우자와의 외식(77%), 배우자와의 여행(56%), 배우자의 건강 관리 활동에 대한 지원(51%). 패널의 43%는 배우자와 취미생활을 함께 한다고 답했다. 일 년에 읽는 단행본(정기간행물 제외)은 평균 20.2권이었다. 18일에 한 권 꼴로 책을 읽는 셈이다. 감명 깊게 읽은 책으로는 <좋은 기업을 넘어 위대한 기업으로>(5%), <시크릿>과 <삼국지>(각각 4%), <세계는 평평하다>(3%) 등이 비교적 많이 꼽혔다. <변화 리더의 조건>, <이기는 습관>, <디테일의 힘>, <인문의 숲에서 경영을 만나다>, <위대한 기업을 넘어 사랑받는 기업으로>, <생각의 탄생>, <깨진 유리창 법칙>, <긍정의 힘>, <어린 왕자>, <마시멜로 이야기>, <로마인 이야기>(각각 2%) 등도 각각 2명 이상이 감명 깊게 읽은 책으로 지목했다. 패 널 CEO 중 종교 생활을 하는 사람은 56%로 조사됐다. 신앙인 중 65%는 기독교인이라고 답했다. 26%는 천주교인이었다. 불교 신자는 7%로 집계됐다. 참고로 일반 국민 중 종교 인구의 비율은 53.1%다(2006년 사회통계조사보고서). 종교인은 나이가 많을수록 뚜렷하게 많은 것으로 조사됐다. 60대 이상 CEO의 경우 74%가 종교 생활을 하고 있다고 답했다. CEO 들은 몇 살에 은퇴하고 싶어 할까? 이번 서베이 결과 평균 67세로 조사됐다. 전체의 61.5%가 여건이 허락한다면 65세 이후에 은퇴하기를 바랐다. 은퇴 희망 연령은 나이가 많을수록 높은 것으로 나타났다(40대 이하 62.6세, 50대 66.0세, 60대 이상 71.8세). CEO들이 은퇴 후에 가장 하고 싶어 하는 것은 29%가 답한 사회봉사 활동이었다(복수응답). 이 어서 여행(27%), 강의(9%), 저작(7%), 공부(6%), 신앙 생활-컨설팅(각각 5%), 연구·개발 활동(4%), 후진 양성(3%) 순으로 꼽혔다. 여행을 제외하면 은퇴 후 사회에 일정한 기여를 하고 싶어 하는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. |

Small Things Matter
I realized throughout last night that small things matter. Each individual behavior that I take really matters. Small insincerity, dishonesty, small gossip, and little bit of act really matter. I didn't expect huge consequence of my little actions but it works like a chaos theory. Little paddles of birds will cause storms in China. Start paying attention to small behaviors!
